If islands usually have a great power of attraction to artists, this exhibition shows how a group of five painters have appropriated for their inspiration the island of Menorca for about half a century. The group consists of the Menorcan, Josep Vives Campomar (1940) and the Catalans, Francesc Artigau (1940), Xavier Serra de Rivera (1946), Josep Serra Llimona (1937) and Miquel Vilà (1940). They show the island from very different angles, its lights and shadows, and turned their relationship as friends into a great artistic conversation in which the island of Menorca is the main protagonist.
Whether through landscapes, seascapes or still lifes these five artists manage to capture in their work the genius loci of Menorca and show us the full validity of figurative art in constant process of renewal. Painting that, with artistic mastery, interacts with multiple motifs for the islanders’ quest for the emotion in art to show gratitude for a land that has known how to preserve itself.
